Nomadic Items (Bikes, Laptops): Does Your Insurance Work on the Street?

Smartphones at 1000 €, electric bikes at 2500 €, laptops, scooters... The value we carry with us on the street has never been higher. But what happens in case of theft outside your home?

The basic principle: coverage limited to the insured address

Multi-Risk Home Insurance (MRH), as its name suggests, protects the contents located at the address mentioned in the contract. If your bike is stolen from the house garage with a break-in, it's covered. If it's stolen while attached to a lamppost downtown, it's not.

The exception: the « Pickpocket / Snatch » guarantee

Some premium contracts (or via a specific paid option) offer extended coverage for your personal belongings while traveling. But here again, pay attention to the conditions:

  • The theft must often be committed with violence or aggression (bag snatching).
  • Pickpocketing without violence (e.g., in the subway) is generally excluded.
  • Theft from a vehicle often requires the vehicle to be broken into AND the items to have been hidden from outside view.

For bikes and scooters

These items almost always require specific dedicated insurance. If your bike is insured, the insurer will demand an approved lock invoice and proof that the bike was attached to a fixed point.

Building the perfect claim file with SafeInventa

In all cases, whether you have an extended home guarantee or specific mobile insurance, the claim will immediately require the purchase invoice of the item, the lock invoice (for bikes), and the serial number (IMEI for phones, frame number for bikes). By recording these details in SafeInventa from day one, you have access to your IMEI number from anywhere, even if it's precisely your phone that was stolen (just log in from a computer).
